FROM HISTORY TO PRESENT OF O’CONNOR PHARMACY
O’Connor Pharmacy hasn’t always been known as O’Connor Pharmacy. In
1958, the store was originally opened as Johnston Drug. It was started
and owned by Helen Johnston’s father, George Humes, then until 1972 it
was run by Howard and Helen Johnston. Johnston’s Drug had a soda
fountain, candy, and cosmetic and gift departments.
In 1972, Bill O’Connor purchased the pharmacy and renamed it O’Connor
Pharmacy. Shortly after the purchase, Bill removed the gift and cosmetic
departments, and replaced them with home health care products, and
rental equipment. The home health care continues to expand at O’Connor
Pharmacy.
In 1979, Gary Bintz moved to Ponca City from Colorado to
become Bill’s partner. At this point, the pharmacy was incorporated, the
interior of the building had been updated, and a drive through window
was installed. In 1985, Bill and Gary started a separate business called
Home IV. Home IV still provides antibiotics therapy, pain therapy and
enteral and parentaral nutrition.
Upon Bill’s Retirement, in 1994 Tim O’Connor bought his father’s share
of the business. The pharmacy continued to grow and prosper. In 1997,
O’Connor Pharmacy bought the franchise for (Flavorx logo), a liquid
medication flavoring system. In 2000, Gary and Tim joined Professional
Compounding Centers of America. Both Tim and Gary attend PCCA’s vigorous
training programs in Houston and have attended seminars to further their
expertise in compounding.
Gary and Tim are able to formulate many different dosage forms and
compound medications that are no longer commercially available. They can
also compound natural hormone replacement therapy for males and females.
O’Connor Pharmacy compounds medications for local and out-of-town
physicians and also compounds veterinary products for pet owners.
In September 2001, we took enormous strides in guaranteeing
quality and quick customer service by totally remodeling the inside and
outside of the store. This remodel gave us more room to work, granting
us the ability to be very much more efficient and allowing us the extra
time to be with our customers. The new remodel also offered us another
drive in window that drastically reduces the “wait time” in line. Unlike
the local Walgreens, you are able to get your prescriptions and your
over-the-counter items right at the convenience of our drive through
windows. We are and have been the fastest pharmacy filling your
prescriptions and meeting your needs, thanks to the remodel of 2001 and
our efficient team of 14, which includes four pharmacists and one new
and exciting addition to the team.
The most recent big change here at O’Connor’s is the most exciting! In
the summer of 2007 we have introduced the newest member of the team:
ScriptPro 200 ®

It is an Automated Prescription Filling Robot with total accuracy and
efficiency! It holds 200 of our prescription medications. The medicine
is stored in “cells”, containers inside the machine’s tinted cabinetry,
which are stacked in columns and rows. The bottles that the medicine is
delivered to you in are in three chambers to the right of the medicines.
As soon as your prescription is entered into our computer system, this
baby goes to work!! First, the automated robotic arm moves to the bottle
dispensing chambers. The robot’s hand attached to the arm, slides down
its arm to select and take the correct size bottle for your
prescription. Next, the arm moves to the correct column, and the hand
rises or descends to the row that holds your medicine. The cell is then
opened and the pills are simultaneously counted and placed in your
bottle. Now it is time to move the filled bottle to the labeling belt.
Once on the belt the bottle gets labeled, then is moved to a slot which
has your name digitally displayed, and awaits final approval from a
pharmacist.
